The Maori constellation Matariki (the Pleiades) is visible in the morning now and marks the beginning of the Maori New Year. On June 13th, you will be able to see Matariki with the Moon (clouds permitting).

For northern Maori, this was the time of the year to plant trees and prepare the land for new crops: What do you think Southern Maori did?

Emergency services

There was a car accident tonight around 10pm on the south end of Main Street. The car was coming into town but veered off the road, down the steep embankment, onto the railroad tracks. Luckily no one was hurt.

I was really impressed at how many people from emergency services showed up. Two fire trucks with perhaps 10 people, and the police and ambulance as well. They were at the scene within minutes and got right to work to get the car off the tracks and tend to the driver and passenger.

How fortunate we are to have such responsive people in our community, people who do this work voluntarily for the benefit of those in need. Thank you for being there and doing such excellent work.
