Cutting It Fine

The Southland Otago Axemen are coming to town on Monday, 29 Dec. Get ready for some exciting competition in woodchopping, sawing, jiggerboard and more.

The Otautau Railway Hotel is hosting the event again this year, and it's always a very enjoyable day. The competition starts at 10am in the hotel parking area. Bring lawn chairs, sunscreen and hats!

Garden Wildlife

A kind reader sent me these extraordinary photos taken from his garden. The first two are damselflies and the third is a dragonfly wing. The damselfly is different from the dragonfly because it can fold its wings to its side whereas the dragonfly keeps its wings at right-angles to its body. I think damselflies are natives but am not sure. Any experts on insects out there?

So with the wonderful weather, sunny and warm, flowers blooming, wildlife everywhere - maybe this can be the beginning of a 'Garden Wildlife' series. If you have photos of the wildlife in your garden, send them to me at I'd be happy to post them on the blog as part of this series.

Local Artist on TradeMe

There's a beautiful painting of the Takitimu Mountains on TradeMe this week. This is called the end of summer and was painted by the ever-talented Otautau artist, Kim Leslie. It would be a perfect Christmas gift for someone who may have moved away from our corner of the world but needs a soulful reminder of our peaceful landscapes.

Though this auction closes Thursday, 11 Dec, Kim will be putting more of her work on TradeMe in the future. You can find her by selecting 'Members' in the drop down menu where it says 'All Listings', and then typing or pasting 'midsummermadnes' (without quotes) in the search box.

It's wonderful to see our artists getting themselves out there in the world.
