Happy Halloween

The Otautau Brownies are holding a Halloween Party next Wednesday, 31st of October, at the Youth Centre on Main Street. The party goes from 6pm-9pm and all kids are welcome. There will be disco, food, and games, and prizes for best costume. It will be a scary, creepy, ghoulishly fun time!

October Calendar

Lots of great events and important meetings coming up in Otautau this month so mark your calendars.


  • 19-22 Oct: Otautau Annual Patchwork exhibition. The Otautau Patchwork and Craft Group's annual Labour Weekend exhibition is always enjoyable. This year, guest exhibitor, Kerry Gow, will feature a wide variety of beautiful quilts. Raffles, including a children’s quilt, books and magazines for sale, morning and afternoon tea. Gold coin admission charge. Otautau Patchwork and Craft Group. Exhibition to be held at the old Courthouse, 146 Main Street, Otautau. Open 10am to 4pm each day.

  • 25 Oct: Otautau Spinning Group Open Day. A $10 entry fee includes morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and a raffle ticket. Otautau New Life Church, cnr of Chester and Queen Streets, 10am-3pm.

  • 27 Oct: Otautau Playcentre Annual Gala Day and Garage Sale. Great family day out. Heaps to see and fun for all. Stalls available to the public to sell your goods. See next News & Views for more details.

  • 24 Nov: "Antagonist Freak Show" art exhibition by local artist Quint Baker, starring Southland models, Ashley Kluyts, Nina Poelman and Chelsea Clark. Styles include post postmodern, new media art, mock art and swampy fashion. At the Courthouse.

  • 14 Dec: Otautau Street Party. Crafts, stalls, entertainment and food. A great time for the community to gather and have fun. All welcome. 5pm-8pm, Main Street, Otautau. To book a stall contact Otautau Promotions, 027-488-3945 or 027-225-8213.

  • Meetings

  • 11 Oct: Wallace Community Board meeting. Public welcome. If you wish to make a presentation to the Board, please advise Kelly Tagg no later than 48 hours before the meeting, 0800-732-732 ext 3652. Meets at SDC office, 176 Main Street, Otautau, side entrance, 6pm.
  • 15 Oct: Otautau Promotions AGM. Discussion will be on the next phase following from the Peter Kenyon Workshop held earlier this year. Promotions team would also like your ideas for a town 'icon' that can be built behind the wooden Otautau sign. All entries go into draw for $50 meal voucher from Otautau Hotel. Put your entry into the suggestion box at the council office.

  • 23 Oct: Otautau Playcentre AGM. All welcome at the Playcentre, 100 Main Street, Otautau, 7.30pm.

    National Standards for Local Schools

    School holidays are here. Parents will be extra busy keeping their kids busy, but as the National Standards reports are in the news, it may be a good time to have a look at what they say - though it's important to know this report does not reflect the total picture of a school and its performance. Even the way the reports have been written shows each school has taken a different approach.
